The act of terrorism can be described in its broadest sense to be an intentionally indiscriminate violence with a view to creating fear, terror and to achieve political, religious or ideological aim.

The origin of the terms terrorist and terrorism dates back to the French revolution of the late 18th century. Terrorism gained popularity after the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings and the attacks on Washington D. C in September 2001.

This article will take you through a list of top 7 dreaded terrorist groups in the world.

ISLAMIC STATE (ISIS)

Top on the list is the Islamic State, officially known as ISIL or ISIS. The ISIS controls northern parts of Iraq and the western parts of Syria, within which it has formed its own brutal government that enacts sharia law. ISIS was founded by Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi. Since its inception, it has carried out acts of barbarism so brutal that even Al Qaeda has condemned it.

The group accepts fighters from across the world and encourages the fighters to immigrate to “heaven on earth” or “al Sham”. The vision of the group is apocalyptic, wherein the group believes that by capturing certain physical territory in the region, they will usher in paradise.

ISIS funding is from selling of drugs, oil, artifacts and slaves. The group has promoted itself heavily through social media via slickly produced videos of gruesome activities like beheadings.

AL-QAEDA

Al-Qaeda earned the biggest “brand name” among all terrorist groups in the world due to the 9-11 attacks on the United States of America. This terrorist group was established by Osama Bin Laden in 1989. Al-Qaeda carried out the 9-11 attacks on US under the leadership of Osama Bin Laden.

The group is notorious for its integrated network and powerful strategies under the current leadership of Ayman Al-Zawahiri.

TALIBAN (Partner with Al Qaeda)

This terrorist group is well known for being one of the few insurgent organizations to have been in charge of a country (Afghanistan) from 1996 to 2001. The Taliban took Afghanistan back into the middle ages with their strict imposition of Sharia and Islamic laws.

The group was founded by Mullah Mohammed Omar, who led the group to blow up ancient’s artifacts and statues and forced women to be covered from head to toe.

TEHRIK-I-TALIBAN PAKISTAN

This terrorist group comprises several Islamist militant groups and it is located in the federally administered tribal areas along the Pakistan-Afghan border.

Pakistani Taliban as it is fondly called was established by BaitullahMehsud in December 2007. The group’s famous attack was on a school in Peshawar, killing children as young as nine.

BOKO HARAM

The Boko Haram terrorist group is actually the deadliest of the groups listed here, having killed more people than ISIS. AbubakarShekau, the leader of Boko Haram has been reported dead on several occasions only to emerge with a new video threatening the Nigerian State.

The group has been responsible for many killings, abductions and a pseudo-state in north eastern part of Nigeria. It received Western attention after it abducted over 250 school girls. 

AL-NUSRA FRONT

Al-Nusra Front in Arabic means “The support for the people of Al-Sham”. The group was originally operating as a branch of Al-Qaeda in Syria and Lebanon.

Al-Nusra is headed by Abu Mohammad Al-Julani.Several countries such as the United Kingdom, United States, Turkey, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Saudi Arabia have designated this group as a terrorist organization.

HEZBOLLAH

This Lebanese terror group emerged from the 1982 Lebanese civil war and it is backed up by Iran and Syria. Hezbollah is considered the biggest foe of Sunni Arab countries and Israel.

This terrorist group boasts the support of 41 percent of Lebanese population according to a CIA report. They are also involved in multiple social and humanitarian activities within the country.

    It could be sometimes very pathetic to see terrorist groups sprouting by the day from every corner of the world despite the strict laws enacted against such action in every country. Terrorists kill more people than accidents and kill so quickly than any epidemic could do. I think with unity from every nation of the world, these groups can be brought down one after the other.
